Americans can't tell the difference between Rye and Bourbon? #whiskey #culture #history

According to a new study from Drexel University, the average American can't taste the difference between Rye and Bourbon, but they used only scent, according to Scotch Whiskey Regulations.

An interesting factoid from the study:
The participants didn’t separate the whiskeys according to their mash bill, but by other properties like brand, age, and alcohol content. For example, they were very likely to group Jim Bean whiskeys together. Lahne guessed that this trend occurred because brands have constant “house” flavors, meaning Jim Bean whiskeys could be described as having a peanut smell, regardless of whether they were a rye or bourbon.

Jack Daniels releases new Bourbon, first time in 20 years. #history #culture #whiskey #bourbon

A new bourbon is being released by our friends at Jack Daniels. The new bottle, called Coopers' Craft, will only be available in a few states for now, but undoubtedly will be released nationally as more product becomes aged properly.

A little about the bourbon:
“Coopers’ Craft is the result of decades of experience in mastering barrel-making and maturation techniques to create truly unique bourbons,” Lawson Whiting, executive vice president and chief brands and strategy officer for Brown-Forman Brands, said in a statement[.] “Owning our cooperage is a testament to this expertise and brings to life the notion that what matters most, we do ourselves.”

Picklebacks and a Country Club - The Drinking Press - Episode 2

This week's episode of The Drinking Press we talk about Picklebacks. Picklebacks consist of a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice. This is designed to cut the burning sensation of a "value price" whiskey. We talk to Reggie Cunningham, the creator of the Pickleback as we know it, and John Roberts, owner of the Bushwick Country Club, the bar at which it was created. Our host Char, despite having nothing but contempt for pickles even has the opportunity to try a pickleback for the first time! Take a listen to see what he thought of it.

Picklebacks are good for your health! #picklebacks #history #culture

Something about the title doesn't make sense right? Healthy and alcohol don't tend to mix, except if it's wine. But in reality, picklebacks are good for your health. Pickle juice has a bunch of great things going on with it that help you. Check out this article about the health benefits of pickle juice.

A good piece from the article:
[Pickle juice] replenishes electrolytes in the body and it contains ten times the electrolytes as most sports drinks. The high electrolyte content promotes hydration and functions and as an antidiuretic which can prevent dehydration while consuming alcohol and aid hangover recovery the following day.

Irish Whiskey Stocks Go Up #drinking #whiskey #history

Irish Whiskey is on the rise thanks to a new distillery in Dublin's Newmarket Square. The new whiskey house, the Teeling Distillery, has grabbed the attention of many a whiskey drinker, and us here at The Drinking Press. Learn a little bit about the distillery and the history of Irish Whiskey through this article in The American Spectator.

A nice tidbit:
Dublin alone had a few dozen whiskey distilleries, such as John Power and Son’s massive John’s Lane distillery. It belched forth 900,000 gallons of liquor per year, employed 275 men and had its own fire-suppression crew.

An 800 Year History of Women and Whiskey #whiskey #startup #drinking #history

This article talks about the long history of women in the whiskey world: whether it be making, distributing, and even gasp drinking it.

Our favorite outtake:
Even if women weren’t the leaders of bootlegging collectives, men made sure they were in the car because they couldn’t be searched by police. Doing so was considered rude, and searching a woman who was driving alone was actually illegal. As a result, women hid flasks in their dresses, drove trucks filled with liquor, and ran multimillion-dollar operations. Women either were hired by syndicates or created their own bootlegging groups.

Visit us at The Drinking Press, and hide some flasks on your person.

Bourbon and Girl Scout Cookie Pairings. Always good to know what to drink with your cookie of choice. #drinking #startup #girlscouts

It's a good habit to know what to drink with your favorite foods, and who could forego girl scout cookies, the delicious cookies sell like hot cakes, without actually being hotcakes. This article talks about the bests bourbons to drink with your girl scout cookies of choice.

My favorite little tidbit:
The rich combination of peanut butter and chocolate initially seemed to be a daunting contender. Would the peanut notes in Johnny Drum create too cloying of a taste, we wondered? Not at all. In fact, it was a perfect match.

Some weird bourbons worth trying. #startup #drinking

Bourbons are a dime a dozen, but that doesn't mean they are all good. In this article, the writer tries a few bourbons that are off the beaten path - with a little bit of experimentation in the barrels.

A little tidbit of the article:
“Bourbon is in a place right now where demand is exceeding production, and this ever-diversifying market has spurred experimentation from all angles,”

Women Rediscovering Whiskey @npr #whiskey #women #bourbon #drinking #podcast #history #startup

NPR gives a nice summary about women and whiskey, past and present, starting with two figures we know (and who some love): Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Kentucky Bourbon in Japan & Awkward Business Moments #drinking #bourbon #whiskey #jimbean #suntory #Japan #history #podcast #startup

Suntory Holdings - a large Japanese corporation - purchased Beam Inc, the company behind Jim Bean, in 2014 in order to break out of the Japanese market. WSJ reports the cross-cultural challenges they face, mostly marketing related, in order to change Jim Bean's image as a "cheap" liquor in Japan into something chic to drink.

Our favorite international "oops" moment:
We have to overcome the huge differences in the Japanese mentality and the American mentality," says Takeshi Niinami, a Harvard Business School graduate who last year became the first present of privately owned Suntory from outside the founding family. "It creates misunderstandings."
Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe, a seventh-generation Jim Beam family member...caused some to cringe at a recent promotional event in Tokyo when he described Suntory executives as his "buddies" and embraced one of them. Japan frowns on physical contact in a business setting.

The Types of Men Who Drink Whiskey @heathermgreene #whiskey #drinking #history #podcast #startup

Heather Greene knows whiskey. Her biography is impressive, from writing Whiskey Distilled, a book about whiskey, to teaching classes at the Flatiron in NYC.

In this post, she writes about the challenge of being asked about being a woman in the whiskey industry.
I wrote a book about whiskey. So by the tenth woman-and-whiskey-themed interview, I began feeling ornery:
"What's it like to be a woman in whiskey?"How the hell would I know otherwise.
No one has yet to ask me about men and whiskey, a topic that might be just as interesting.
Fed up with constantly being asked about her gender, she categorizes the men drinking whiskey and how they react to women drinking whiskey. The "Non-Believer" is my favorite because it's closest to my experience:
"Do you really drink that stuff?" the Non-Believer asks women who drink whiskey at the bar. Remind them of the other things women do, like put down-payments on entire buildings and vote.

The In-and-Outs of Whiskey @Eater #drinking #whiskey #startup

In the last several years the whiskey market has exploded. With so many factors contributing to the taste of a whiskey, from the temperature of the locale where it's aged, to the type of barrels it's aged in, you might need decades of experience in a distillery to understand your pour.

Luckily, Eater's guide, which you can read here, will help you impress any barkeep.

Our favorite part:

Distilleries today are experimenting with everything from oats to triticale, quinoa to millet, and a range of other grains to produce new whiskey riffs.

Women Drinking Whiskey for the First Time. As to be Expected, Good Times Ensue @BuzzFeed #women #whiskey #firsttime #drinking #startup #history

Buzzfeed had some of its ladies try whiskey for the first time. They were timid at first, but most of them changed their minds pretty quickly. As a woman who likes whiskey, it's nice to see some new converts.

HERE is the video.

Some favorite quotes:

I might cry, and then I think that I'm going to throw up for like an hour afterward.
Smells like an old man, like really strong grandpa.
I would take whiskey over vodka any day.
