An Illustrated Guide to Cocktails from the South #derby #drinking #history

In honor of the Kentucky Derby which just wrapped up a couple weeks ago, we present The Kitchn's Illustrated Guide to Cocktails in the South.

A classic cocktail, and Derby favorite, the Mint Julep, is described:
[A] drink[] like the Old Fashioned, a muddle of bitters, sugar, and bourbon or rye whiskey crowned with a cherry and an orange, and what might be the South's most beloved beverage — especially around this time of year. The mint julep features bourbon, combined with muddled mint, sugar, and water, and poured overtop a heaping mound of crushed ice.

Americans can't tell the difference between Rye and Bourbon? #whiskey #culture #history

According to a new study from Drexel University, the average American can't taste the difference between Rye and Bourbon, but they used only scent, according to Scotch Whiskey Regulations.

An interesting factoid from the study:
The participants didn’t separate the whiskeys according to their mash bill, but by other properties like brand, age, and alcohol content. For example, they were very likely to group Jim Bean whiskeys together. Lahne guessed that this trend occurred because brands have constant “house” flavors, meaning Jim Bean whiskeys could be described as having a peanut smell, regardless of whether they were a rye or bourbon.
Visit us at The Drinking Press, and give us your thoughts on this study.

S3stat! Our saving grace!

Here at TDP, we're still getting our sea legs. While on this voyage, we know we need to have stats on how many people are listening, and that's where S3stat comes in.

S3stat lets you (you, being a podcaster) know how many "hits" or times your podcast episode is downloaded.   We pair this with Google Analytics to get a full picture of what we're seeing.

We currently push TDP via iTunes and our site, and will be moving into other aggregators, like Stitcher. If you have other recommendations on where to drop our episode, let us know!

S3stat is used with AWS S3, which is what we use to host our sites.  So if you have audio files on AWS S3 and need to know how many times your audio has been downloaded, check these guys out.

Thanks to the S3stat dashboard, we can see our subscriber list has been growing.

Jack Daniels releases new Bourbon, first time in 20 years. #history #culture #whiskey #bourbon

A new bourbon is being released by our friends at Jack Daniels. The new bottle, called Coopers' Craft, will only be available in a few states for now, but undoubtedly will be released nationally as more product becomes aged properly.

A little about the bourbon:
“Coopers’ Craft is the result of decades of experience in mastering barrel-making and maturation techniques to create truly unique bourbons,” Lawson Whiting, executive vice president and chief brands and strategy officer for Brown-Forman Brands, said in a statement[.] “Owning our cooperage is a testament to this expertise and brings to life the notion that what matters most, we do ourselves.”

Picklebacks and a Country Club - The Drinking Press - Episode 2

This week's episode of The Drinking Press we talk about Picklebacks. Picklebacks consist of a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice. This is designed to cut the burning sensation of a "value price" whiskey. We talk to Reggie Cunningham, the creator of the Pickleback as we know it, and John Roberts, owner of the Bushwick Country Club, the bar at which it was created. Our host Char, despite having nothing but contempt for pickles even has the opportunity to try a pickleback for the first time! Take a listen to see what he thought of it.

Picklebacks are good for your health! #picklebacks #history #culture

Something about the title doesn't make sense right? Healthy and alcohol don't tend to mix, except if it's wine. But in reality, picklebacks are good for your health. Pickle juice has a bunch of great things going on with it that help you. Check out this article about the health benefits of pickle juice.

A good piece from the article:
[Pickle juice] replenishes electrolytes in the body and it contains ten times the electrolytes as most sports drinks. The high electrolyte content promotes hydration and functions and as an antidiuretic which can prevent dehydration while consuming alcohol and aid hangover recovery the following day.

An 800 Year History of Women and Whiskey #whiskey #startup #drinking #history

This article talks about the long history of women in the whiskey world: whether it be making, distributing, and even gasp drinking it.

Our favorite outtake:
Even if women weren’t the leaders of bootlegging collectives, men made sure they were in the car because they couldn’t be searched by police. Doing so was considered rude, and searching a woman who was driving alone was actually illegal. As a result, women hid flasks in their dresses, drove trucks filled with liquor, and ran multimillion-dollar operations. Women either were hired by syndicates or created their own bootlegging groups.

Soju Is For Friends and Family @NYTmag #startup #soju #drinking #history #culture

My experiences with soju have always been pleasant - surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones.

My first sip of soju was with my father as he taught me the rules and etiquette of drinking our Motherland's alcoholic beverage of choice. I remember drinking soju with friends in high school, pouring each other shot after shot in Flushing, NY where speaking Korean was the only form of ID required. Some of my fondest memories were made drinking soju surrounded by friends, enjoying nightlife in Seoul, as a college student studying abroad. Author Rosie Schaap, clearly understands what soju means to Koreans.

My favorite part:
After more than three, I felt no sadness. Instead, a just-right fullness, from the food, the drink, the poems, the pleasure of a few companionable hours. It felt as close to being in a cabin in the mountains, after a hike, as I’ve ever felt at my kitchen table.
